A pregnant Brazilian woman whose visa had expired will be able to stay in the United Kingdom until after she gives birth, the London Daily Telegraph reported Friday.
Initially the Home Office, the British ministry responsible for, among other things, immigration enforcement, told Daisy Santiago she had to return home.
The government appears to have reversed its decision due to concerns Ms. Santiago raised on appeal. Should she return to Brazil during her pregnancy, the 22-year-old woman may likely contract the mosquito-borne Zika virus, endangering the health of her unborn son.
A Home Office spokeswoman confirmed that she was granted permission to remain in Britain until Oct. 31 on an “exceptional basis,” the Telegraph reported.
