DENVER — Sorry, Tebow fans: Former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow has denied a New York Times report that said he was scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention.
In a Thursday post on Instagram, Mr. Tebow dismissed the report, which appeared Wednesday in the Times, calling it a “rumor.”
“What’s up, everybody? I just got back from the Philippines and I wake up this morning to find out that I’m speaking at the Republican National Committee,” Mr. Tebow said. “It’s amazing how fast rumors fly, and that’s exactly what it is, a rumor.”
The Heisman Trophy winner known for his Christian ministry said that, “My goal has always been to be able to make a difference in the biggest way possible, and if one day that’s in the political realm, then that’s what I’ll do.”
“But right now I believe that that’s through our foundation and our amazing partners and fighting for kids who can’t fight for themselves,” Mr. Tebow said, referring to the Tim Tebow Foundation, a children’s charity.
The Times said it had obtained a lineup of speakers that was confirmed by two people “with direct knowledge of convention planning” showing that Mr. Tebow would deliver remarks on the final night of next week’s convention.
The newspaper later backtracked on its scoop with a followup saying that Mr. Tebow “seemed to deny” the report.
In his post, Mr. Tebow added that, “I love our country and I’ll do anything for America.”
The Republican National Convention runs July 18-21 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
