A 4-year-old boy died this week when a giant barbecue pit shaped like a gun fell over, crushing him at a home in Liberty County, Texas.
Authorities were called to the home, east of Houston, on Tuesday afternoon and found the boy’s distraught mother pointing to her injured son who was pinned under a huge steel grill in the yard, the department said in a news release.
Deputy Ruben Arellano of the Liberty County sheriff’s department performed CPR on the child — later identified as Bryan Jara — while waiting for an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The mother was not immediately identified.
Investigators said the woman was inside doing chores while her son played outside.
When she heard a “thud,” she went outside and found her son pinned underneath the heavy novelty barbecue pit.
Authorities believe the boy was trying to climb on the pit when it fell over on him.
They called the boy’s death a “tragic accident.” An autopsy has been requested.
