FOWLERVILLE, Mich. (AP) - Whiteout conditions and a freezing blanket of snow on Interstate 96 near Fowlerville caused a crash involving at least 40 vehicles that left three people dead.

Authorities in Livingston County say the crash happened shortly before 10 Thursday morning when a snow squall reduced visibility to less than 50 feet. Besides the three people who were killed, the chain reaction of crashes that resulted in several vehicles in ditches and a tractor-trailer jackknifed across most of the lanes of the interstate. About a dozen people were injured and some motorists had to be extricated from their vehicles by emergency crews.
