Fox News’s Hispanic-focused news site Fox News Latino is shutting down, network correspondent Bryan Llenas tweeted Thursday morning. The move comes months after a Spanish-langauge entertainment network in the NewsCorp family shut down its operations.
“Sad day - @foxnewslatino is history,” the New York-based Mr. Llenas tweeted, adding, “My thoughts on my time there with a special team. Fox News Latino has a lot to be proud of. #latino”
Attached were two screen captures of what appear to be an email about the 6-year-old project’s demise.
“Good news is nearly the entire team is still working at Fox News. No massive layoffs or anything,” added Mr. Llenas in a follow up tweet.
In a Nov. 2014 Politico interview, Fox News Latino executive Francisco Cortes said that the project was the idea of Roger Ailes, the news channel’s longtime CEO who departed this summer in the wake of sexual harassment allegations.
“He came to me and said ’we need to do more for U.S. Latinos, and Latinos in general.’ So he goes, ’Frankie, would you mind helping me build something, something we can talk to Latinos on,’ and I said absolutely,” Mr. Cortes told Politico at the time, adding that the project had outlasted similar ones at NBC, Huffington Post and CNN.
In July, Fox International Channels sold off its stake in the Spanish-language network MundoFox, which had been launched nearly four years earlier.
As Variety reported at the time, the network had struggled in both ratings and distribution.
