OPINION:
For Carrie Fisher, who passed away Tuesday, it was either the best of times or the worst of times (“Carrie Fisher, Star Wars’ Princess Leia, dead at 60,” Web, Dec. 27). Ms. Fisher was born to famous parents — Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher — and reached movie stardom at a young age as Princess Leia of the “Star Wars” series. In addition to being an actress, she was a prolific author and an accomplished screenwriter.
But she also had serious alcohol and drug problems (even almost dying of an overdose) and mental-health problems. She was married only once, to singer/songwriter Paul Simon; the marriage lasted less than a year.
But in spite of her problems, Ms. Fisher maintained her self-deprecating sense of humor, which was often witty and sarcastic.
May the force always be with Carrie Fisher, as the intergalactic universe badly needs someone as free-thinking, independent, rebellious, courageous and defiant as she.
