Days after suffering a heart attack on board a flight from London to Los Angeles, actress Carrie Fisher has died. The “Star Wars” icon was 60.

Ms. Fisher’s family confirmed the actress died Tuesday morning.

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” family spokesman Simon Halls told People Magazine on Tuesday. “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

Ms. Fisher, the daughter of Hollywood legends Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, is survived by her own daughter, Billie Lourde, her brother, Todd Fisher, and sisters Tricia and Joely Fisher.

Best known for her role as “Princess Leia” in the “Star Wars” movies, including last year’s “The Force Awakens,” Ms. Fisher also starred in many other films during a long acting career, including “When Harry Met Sally,” “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “The Blues Brothers.” She was also a novelist and screenwriter.

Ms. Fisher’s autobiographical novel, “Postcards From the Edge,” was made into a film of the same title with Meryl Streep playing a drug-addled actress with an overbearing mother, played in the film by Shirley MacLaine.
