SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A fundraising campaign for a $12 million top-to-bottom renovation of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Syracuse is close to reaching its goal.
The Post-Standard reports (https://bit.ly/2i9yl0z ) approximately $11.5 million has been raised so far by parishioners of the 131-year-old cathedral, Catholics from throughout the Diocese of Syracuse and other donors.
The diocese is seeking to raise an addition $7 million to pay for short- and long-term maintenance along with social outreach initiatives and other programs.
Among the planned improvements include a new roof, electric system, lighting and audio system. The cathedral’s pews, which can seat up to 800 people, will be refurbished as well.
The cathedral was originally known as St. Mary’s Church when it was built in 1885.
Restoration work is expected to begin in January.
