MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont is continuing to lead the nation with the largest per capita number of Peace Corps volunteers.
Figures released Tuesday show that 52 Vermonters are currently serving overseas with the Peace Corps, which works out to be 8.3 volunteers per 100,000 residents.
The Vermont figure is followed by the District of Columbia, at 8.2 and then Montana at 5.
Maine and Rhode Island share the eighth ranking rate of 3.9 along with Virginia, Colorado and Oregon.
Meanwhile, Vermont’s Burlington-South Burlington area ranks second in the country among metropolitan areas per capita with 18 residents serving worldwide.
Since its creation in 1961 more than 225,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers who have done development work in 140 countries across the globe.
