OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Ogden’s mayor plans to announce his selection for the city’s next police chief this week following the announcement of Chief Mike Ashment’s retirement.

City officials said Monday that Ashment will retire once the new chief is selected and approved. Mayor Mike Caldwell is expected to announce Ashment’s replacement on Wednesday.

Caldwell tells the Standard-Examiner (https://bit.ly/2h4AdGO) that the search for a new chief was conducted over several weeks. The City Council will vote during a Jan. 3 meeting on whether to approve Caldwell’s selection.

Ashment has been working for the Ogden Police Department for 30 years. He became police chief in 2012.

Ashment says he looks forward to spending more time with his family and enjoying his hobbies of hunting, horseback riding and snowmobiling.
