PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Time is running out to bring a minor league hockey team to Portland, Maine, next year.
The Portland Pirates announced in May the club had been sold and was moving to Springfield, Massachusetts for 2016-17.
Godfrey Wood and Brad Church seven months ago said they’d try to bring a minor league hockey franchise to the Cross Insurance Arena. Wood helped bring the Pirates to Portland in 1993.
Wood tells The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/2hD8pHY ) he’s still optimistic professional hockey will return to the city, but declined to say whether they’ve applied for a franchise.
The ECHL schedule is released in April.
The league says it probably has to have a franchise application within the next week or 10 days to be considered at the league’s Board of Governors meeting next month.
