A major earthquake struck the southwest Pacific off the northeast coast of New Guinea on Wednesday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Service, the magnitude 6.9 quake was centered about 20 miles east-northeast of Namatanai, on Papua New Guinea’s island province of New Ireland.

There was no immediate word on possible tsunami effects of the offshore earthquake.
