A 91-year-old man with a concealed firearm shot a man who was trying to rob him Monday near Detroit, police said.
The victim was approached by the suspect as he was exiting his car at a Rite Aid in Eastpointe, Sgt. Martin Campbell told The Detroit News.
“The suspect approached and began to act erratic. [The victim] told him he had a gun, he warned him three or four times and even had the gun pointed at him,” Sgt. Campbell said. “But the suspect kept coming and pointed an unknown object at the victim.”
He said that at that point, the victim opened fire.
“He attempted to rob [the victim], and [the victim] had a CPL (concealed pistol license) and ended up shooting the suspect,” Sgt. Campbell said. “It’s as simple as that.”
The suspect was shot in the neck and fled across Gratiot Avenue, The Detroit News reported. Police said the man was talking and acting erratically when responding officers apprehended him a short time later.

The victim is cooperating with authorities, Sgt. Campbell said. He said the shooting is being investigated as self-defense during an attempted armed robbery.
“Nothing’s ever clear cut but that’s what we’re calling it right now: an attempted robbery shooting,” he told The Detroit News.
The suspect remained hospitalized Monday and in police custody, the newspaper reported.
