Pop stars Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato on Monday canceled a pair of joint concerts in North Carolina, citing a recently passed measure barring people from using the public facilities of the opposite sex.
The singers said the “hateful” law discriminates against transgender people, who wish to use restrooms and locker rooms on the basis of gender identity.
“North Carolina’s discriminatory HB2 law is extremely disappointing, and it takes away some of the LGBT community’s most basic rights and protections,” Mr. Jonas and Ms. Lovato said in a statement. “But we will not allow this to stop us from continuing to make progress for equality and acceptance.”
“We know the cancellation of these shows is disappointing to our fans, but we trust that you will stand united with us against this hateful law,” they said.
Mr. Jonas and Ms. Lovato are the latest in a long list of performers — including Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Boston, Tracy Morgan and the Blue Man Group — to cancel shows in North Carolina in response to the law.
