Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry says no one fought the nation’s capital harder than he did during his time as governor but that one-time 2016 GOP rival Donald Trump’s “bullets” through Washington, D.C., ended up hitting him as well.

“I’ve been in politics 30 years,” Mr. Perry said on Monday evening’s “Hannity” program on Fox News. “Nobody fought Washington any harder than I did, but Donald Trump’s bullets [going] through Washington went through and hit people like myself, hit people like all the governors that are on the stage, for instance.”

Mr. Perry announced Friday he is suspending his 2016 campaign and said on Fox News that a looming indictment in an abuse-of-power case back home and failing to qualify for the main stage at the opening GOP debates last month hampered his ability to raise money.

“I don’t believe that this is the only profession in the world that your experience ought to be held against you,” he said. “I think it matters to have really good, qualified individuals who have a record of success and to trumpet that and to be for it.”

“Now, Washington — that’s a different deal,” Mr. Perry said. “We do need to blow that place up, figuratively.”
