Cruise missiles launched from a Russia warship and aimed at targets in Syria have crashed in Iran, two U.S. officials said.
At least four missiles crashed as they flew over Iran, U.S. military and intelligence officials concluded. One official told CNN there may be casualties, but another official said that has not yet been confirmed.
It is unclear exactly where the missiles landed. Russian ships have been anchored in the south Caspian Sea and the likely flight path for the missiles into Syria would cross over both Iraq and Iran.
Moscow’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Wednesday four Russian Navy warships have fired a total of 26 missiles from the Caspian Sea at 11 Islamic State targets in Syria.
“According to objective control data, all the targets were destroyed. No civilian objects sustained damage,: Mr. Shoigu said, RT news reported.
