DUNGANNON, Va. (AP) — Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting of a man by a sheriff’s deputy outside a house fire in Scott County.
State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says Scott County sheriff’s deputies responded along with volunteer firefighters to the home early Saturday in Dungannon after a report that a man was inside the house with a gun.
Geller says as firefighters fought the blaze, 63-year-old Gary Delp appeared at the front door and began walking toward a deputy. She says Delp refused the deputy’s order to drop the gun and was shot by the deputy.
Geller says Delp was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee, for treatment of serious injuries. The deputy wasn’t injured.
Geller says the incident is under investigation.
