Harry Connick Jr.
“That Would Be Me” (releases Oct. 23)
Columbia
The New Orleans crooner spins new yarns in his unique style on “That Would Be Me.” “Smile” tops the disc in an uptempo cadence, followed by a gospel-infused tune called “Like We Do.” “Songwriter” is an intriguing, self-reflexive ditty on the process of artistic creation. “Do You Really Need Her” is a painful narrative of a love lost to a romantic rival told in a minor key. “You Have No Idea” and “Prisoners” are soulful exercises. There are a few lesser cuts (like “Hurts”), but ovearll Mr. Connick shows off his considerable musical chops in yet another solid musical effort.
