As his potential successors take the stage in Las Vegas, President Obama on Tuesday night appealed to Democrats and urged party foot soldiers to “work even harder” than they did in the past several election cycles.
“I’m still fired up and ready to go. I’m not just asking you to work as hard for our party as you did in 2008 and 2012 — I’m asking you to work even harder,” the president said in a video message just before the five Democratic White House candidates took the stage for the party’s first presidential primary debate. “If we do that, I know Democrats won’t just win the White House, and Congress, and elections all the way down the ticket — we’ll keep building on the progress of the last several years.”
In his brief message, the president specifically cited health care, climate-change action, same-sex marriage and Wall Street financial reform as areas in which the Democratic party has promoted positive change in the U.S. over the past seven years.
