Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Sunday that “hundreds of people” have called and tweeted his campaign to confirm that thousands of Muslims in New Jersey publicly celebrated the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the real estate mogul stuck by claims that have been widely discredited by media outlets and fact-checkers. Mr. Trump maintains that in the immediate aftermath of the attacks, he saw television clips of Muslims in New Jersey rejoicing that the U.S. had been attacked.

He also said his campaign is searching for additional proof, including newspaper clips from the days after the attacks.

“I saw it on television. So did many other people … I saw it at the time. I stick by it. Hundreds of people have confirmed it,” Mr. Trump said. “I’ve had hundreds of people call in and tweet on Twitter saying that they saw it, and I was 100 percent right … Why would I take it back? I’m not going to take it back.”
