A bus carrying college students home from Thanksgiving break crashed and flipped over on a freeway near Richmond, Va., injuring 33 people.

According to TV station WWBT, the Richmond NBC affiliate, the Abbott Trailways bus was mostly carrying students from Virginia Tech, Radford University, the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The bus was traveling on Powhite Parkway when it overturned around 7:15 p.m., leaving one person in critical condition and 32 others with minor injuries.

There was no immediate indication of the cause of the crash, which police said they were investigating.

“When you have a bus with that many students, we’re very fortunate there weren’t more seriously injured,” Lt. Jason Elmore of the Chesterfield Fire Department told WWBT.
