A magnitude 7.5 earthquake has struck eastern Peru, the United States Geological Survey reported.
According to the USGS, the quake struck the inland area around 5:45 p.m. local time and was centered more than 350 miles underground.
There was no immediate word on casualties.
The epicenter is on the border of two Peruvian regions — Madre de Dios and Ucayali. Both are low-lying Amazon forest regions and are thinly populated, with a combined size of 72,000 square miles and about 500,000 people, which about the size of the state of Washington, which has 7 million.
