MILWAUKEE — At the Republican presidential debate Tuesday, Ohio Gov. John Kasich warned voters to beware not only of Democrats’ promises of more government benefits, but of his fellow GOP candidates’ promises of lower taxes.

Mr. Kasich stressed that lower taxes had to come with balancing the budget in order to fully restore the U.S. economy.

“The simple fact of the matter is we do a lot of promises in this debate — a lot of promises about these tax cuts or tax scheme sometimes I call them,” he said, adding that it was no different than the promises of government giveaways made by Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“Hillary and the Democrats promise everything on the spending side. We’ve got to be responsible about what we propose on the tax side,” he said.

He said lower taxes only worked if accompanied by lower spending.

Mr. Kasich has made his record of balancing the federal budgets when he was a congressman and of balancing the budget in Ohio the cornerstone of his campaign. He has promised to do it again if elected president and to do it in eight years.

“I’ve done it twice. I’ll do it thrice,” he said.

“When you balance the budget and you cut taxes, people get work,” he said. “The most important moral purpose as leaders in a political system is to make sure we create an environment for job creation so that people can live there dreams and relive their God-given potential.”
