Sam Simon, the co-creator of “The Simpsons,” died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He was 59.

The official Facebook page for the Sam Simon Foundation, which rescues and trains stray dogs, was updated with the following message on Monday: “It is with much sadness that we must let you know that Sam Simon has passed over.”

“We all miss him, and in his honor, we will continue bringing his vision to light through our work at The Sam Simon Foundation,” the statement said. “We take comfort in knowing how many greetings he is receiving across that Rainbow Bridge. We love you Sam!”

Simon helped develop “The Simpsons,” now in its 27th year of production, with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks. He was diagnosed in February 2013 with terminal colon cancer.

“He was a genius and a great humanitarian in ways public and private,” said Simpsons executive producer Al Jean in a statement. “I personally owe him more than can be repaid, but I will do my best to help every animal I can in his memory.”
