WASHINGTON — District Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to announce a fire chief for the nation’s capital.

Bowser is expected to make the announcement at a news conference Monday morning at a fire station on F Street northwest.

Interim Chief Eugene Jones has served in the role since embattled Chief Kenneth Ellerbe stepped down in July.

Ellerbe’s three years were marked by complaints of poor service and staffing shortages in the department. During his tenure, the fire department faced criticism for delays in patient care and the death of an elderly man after firefighters ignored calls for help from bystanders.

Jones joined the department after working for the Prince George’s County fire department.
