Former Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey said Wednesday he plans to run for Rep. Donna Edwards’ 4th congressional district seat in Maryland after Ms. Edwards said Tuesday she’s running to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski.
“Now, the time has come for me to return to public life, but I need your support,” Mr. Ivey, who dropped out of the running to challenge Ms. Edwards in 2012, said in an email to supporters. “Together, we can champion the struggle to improve our schools, build a new economy that provides good jobs that pay a living wage, continue to reduce crime, and address the mortgage foreclosure disaster that continues to threaten hardworking people.”
Mr. Ivey also outlined some of his other experience, which includes time spent working for Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, former Sen. Paul Sarbanes of Maryland and former U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle.
“The people of this district deserve a Congress that works for them — that spends less time fighting with each other and more time fighting for you,” Mr. Ivey wrote. “With your help, I would like to get back in the ring and continue the fight to help people improve their lives and achieve their dreams.”
The retirement of Ms. Mikulski has prompted Ms. Edwards, whose district includes the suburb of Prince George’s County east of D.C., and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, whose district includes the D.C. suburb of Montgomery County, to announce their intentions to run to replace her in the Senate. Democratic State Del. Kumar P. Barve has said he plans to run for Mr. Van Hollen’s seat.
