WASHINGTON — District police have found what they believe to be human remains in the Potomac River, hours after finding the body of a man in the Tidal Basin.

Department spokesman Sean Hickman says police made the Potomac River discovery in northwest Washington while investigating reports of suspicious objects in the water on Wednesday afternoon.

Another spokesman, Paul Metcalf, says the remains were found near the Kennedy Center. Authorities are investigating.

About six hours earlier, the body of a man was found partially submerged in the Tidal Basin. The man has not been identified.

It is unknown whether the two cases are related.
