PHILADELPHIA — Rainbow crosswalks have been painted at each of the cross sections at 13th and Locust streets in support of Philadelphia’s LGBT community.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (https://bit.ly/1GuzSQy) the walkways are made up of six horizontal red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet stripes.

Although the crosswalks appeared overnight into Thursday morning, they were planned for some time.

Philly Pride Presents senior adviser Chuck Volz said the crosswalks were initially estimated to cost $26,000, but that the installation was completed for much less.

Albert Lee, an employee at the Independence Visitor Center, says the crosswalks show tourists that Philadelphia is a gay-friendly city.

The rainbow crosswalks will be dedicated at the Annual Reminders Block Party on July 5 honoring the 50th anniversary of the first wave of U.S. LGBT-rights group demonstrations.
