Nancy Reagan turned 94 on Monday, complete with a birthday cake trimmed with pink posies, her face aglow with an expectant smile. Social media hummed with well wishes for the former first lady and there were observations about her continuing place in history as well.
“Nancy Reagan, keeper of the Reagan legacy,” wrote historian and Reagan biographer Craig Shirley in an essay for Newsmax.
“The soulmate of the nation’s beloved 40th president has transcended naysayers to focus on bravely carrying the Reagan name forward,” Mr. Shirley observed.
After meeting in Hollywood, Ronald Reagan married then Nancy Davis in 1952.
“You know, if Nancy Davis hadn’t come along when she did, I would have lost my soul,” Reagan once recalled, while his wife herself declared, “My life didn’t really begin until I met Ronnie.”
Indeed, the romance was to last a lifetime, described by the press as “a romance between a couple with no vices” who never took each other for granted.
