The Washington Capitals began their limited pursuit of free-agent help on Thursday afternoon by signing defenseman Taylor Chorney to a one-year, $700,000 contract.
Chorney, 28, spent much of last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, but played in seven games with the Penguins. The 6-foot-1, 189-pounder has played in in 68 games at the NHL level over the past seven seasons, four of which were spent in the Edmonton Oilers’ organization.
The signing of Chorney may address the team’s need for a seventh defenseman, with Nate Schmidt and Dmitry Orlov expected to contribute as the third defensive pairing next season.
Washington also signed left wing Stan Galiev, who was a restricted free agent, to a two-year, $1.15 million contract.
Galiev, 23, made his NHL debut at the end of last season after being drafted in the third round in 2010. He will be on a two-way contract in 2015-16 but has a one-way deal the following year.
