Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said during the first day of a two-day swing through New Hampshire Wednesday that Americans will not choose another “untested” U.S. senator to be the country’s chief executive after electing President Obama.

“Americans are going to want someone who has been tested, someone who’s got results in their background, and we’re not going to choose another young, untested United States senator,” Mr. Perry said, the New Hampshire Journal reported. “I don’t think that is where Americans are going to want to go.”

Several recently elected U.S. senators — notably Ted Cruz of Texas, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Marco Rubio of Florida — are strongly weighing bids. Mr. Perry has used a similar line recently, which Mr. Cruz brushed off.

“Executive experience is really important,” Mr. Perry said. “We’re going to be eight years off a young, inexperienced United States senator, and those eight years are not going to reflect well on his ability to get things done.”
