OPINION:
The life and death of Kayla Mueller at the hands of the savages of the self-proclaimed Islamic State has touched the civilized world (“Obama vows retribution against Islamic State for Kayla Mueller death,” Web, Feb. 10).
In learning of the strength, character, compassion, decency and manner of expression of this extraordinary and beautiful young woman whose greatest concern about being held captive was for those who loved her, it is difficult to believe that she was only 26 years old.
It should come as a surprise to no one that those responsible for her death announced it by sending her family a photograph of her body. Her captors have served to demonstrate anew the threat the world faces from those who would kill and maim for the ’sport’ of it, a prerequisite for belonging to the organization obviously being to have developed a depraved indifference to human life.
My first impulse is to wonder how Miss Mueller’s family can go on with their lives amidst the horror that has been inflicted on them, but they will go on, bolstered by the knowledge that they shall always have the love and prayers of a nation and a world that will not allow Kayla’s memory to die. May God heal their aching hearts and comfort them, and may Kayla rest in peace.
