Veteran infielder Stephen Drew signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals, according to multiple reports Tuesday night. CBS Sports first reported the deal.
Drew is a left-handed hitter who has played the majority of his career at shortstop. He can also play second base.
Reaching a deal with Drew bolsters the Nationals’ middle infield depth, an offseason priority for general manager Mike Rizzo. Drew was drafted 15th overall in 2004 by the Arizona Diamondbacks when Rizzo was the head of scouting for the organization.
Last season, Drew, 32, hit 17 homers but just .201 for the New York Yankees. Scott Boras, who has several links to the Nationals’ roster, is his agent.
Drew is the second middle infield acquisition in the last week. The Nationals have also reached an agreement with NLCS MVP Daniel Murphy.
