About six in 10 Republicans support 2016 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the United States, though about the same percentage of Americans overall do not support it, according to a new poll.
Fifty-nine percent of Republicans support the idea — which Mr. Trump says is needed for national security purposes — according to a new ABC News-Washington Post poll.
But 60 percent of Americans overall say the proposed ban is the wrong thing to do. That includes 82 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of independents who say it’s the wrong thing to do.
Fifty-four percent of Americans said mainstream Islam is a peaceful religion, while 28 percent said they think it encourage violence.
And 73 percent said Muslims living in the U.S. experience discrimination because of their religion, compared to 22 percent who say they do not.
