President Obama on Thursday pushed more Americans to vote and blasted voter ID laws that he says keep some from the polls, but the White House wouldn’t support calls to move election day to the weekend in order to increase access.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Mr. Obama is open to changes in the nation’s electoral process to make it easier for men and women to vote. Holding elections on the weekend, however, may carry its own unique complications, Mr. Earnest said, though he didn’t specify what those complications are.
“There are a variety of ideas people have come up with to make it easier, or somehow encourage people to participate in the electoral process. And I know some who have taken a close look at this issue, for example, have found there might be some downsides to moving election day to a weekend rather than a weekday,” he said.
