And here is a word of explanation from one of the freshmen, explaining Jesus’ words about “looking on a woman with lust”— I’m a Duke freshman. Here’s why I refused to read ‘Fun Home.’It’s not about being uncomfortable. It’s about being asked to do something that I think is immoral.

***This week marks the 60th anniversary of the murder in Mississippi of a 14 year old African-American teen from Chicago. This shocking event was an early spark that lit the fire of the Civil Rights Acts of the 1960s. At his funeral visitation at their church in Chicago, his mother bravely insisted on an open casket, so that only a pane of plate glass separated the viewer’s eyes from the grotesque fruit of Jim Crow.

***I must admit that I know very little about the John Birch Society, and I knew nothing about the man, John Birch, until I read this article. Apparently, yesterday was the 70th anniversary of his death by the hands of Chinese Communists. Birch was a Baptist missionary to China, who also helped rescue downed American pilots, including James Doolittle who said in his autobiography that he didn’t think Birch would have agreed to his name being used by the “John Birch Society.”
