OPINION:
Yes, Mrs. Pelosi, I have read the nuclear agreement with Iran (“Pelosi on Iran deal opponents: ’Have they even read it?’” Web, July 30). There is a provision for previously unknown nuclear sites that requires the International Atomic Energy Agency to have a reasonable suspicion of banned activity at the site before they may ask to inspect it. If Iran refuses, the IAEA may take the “dispute” to the joint commission that purportedly oversees the entire agreement. Iran and its supporters Russia and China have seats on the joint commission. If there is still no resolution after this, the “dispute” may be taken to the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and China have absolute veto power.
The agreement requires 24 days’ notice to Iran for planned inspections of known nuclear sites. Now we are learning that the IAEA entered into a secret side agreement with Iran that allows Iran to select the samples the agency will test when Iran allows inspections.
This is hardly an enforceable agreement. If lawyers crafted it, they should be disbarred for incompetence. It is so bad that every member of the Congress, regardless of party affiliation, should vote to reject it, because it will never prevent Iran from producing nuclear weapons. The agreement is a complete farce.
