William Paul, the son of Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul, was cited Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky, for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

Police said the 22-year-old Paul was found sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that had rear-ended a parked car, according to a citation, the Herald-Leader reported.

Police said the vehicle did not belong to William Paul and it was not insured. He was by himself in the vehicle and no one was in the parked car that he allegedly struck, the newspaper said.

Police said he smelled of alcohol and had “bloodshot, watery eyes.” The citation also said that William Paul was behaving in a “belligerent” manner and had slurred speech, the Herald-Leader reported.

The son sustained minor injuries after the crash and has been charged with driving under the influence and for not having car insurance, the paper reported.

A spokesman for Sen. Paul said he “does not comment on any private matter in regards to his family.”

William Paul has had two prior alcohol-related interactions with law enforcement, including a charged assault, the paper reported.
