The United State has agreed to work with China to hunt down corrupt Chinese officials fleeing abroad, the official Xinhua news agency reported Friday.
Chinese domestic security leaders Meng Jianzhu and Guo Shengkun, and U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson met this week to discuss China’s commitment to find runaway “economic fugitives,” as well as counter-terrorism, intellectual property rights, maritime law enforcement and cybersecurity issues, Xinhua reported.
Both sides agreed that they would not provide refuge to fugitives, the report said.
Chinese public security authorities said that the U.S. supports Chinese programs called “Sky Net” and “Operation Fox Hunt,” which are meant to coordinate a campaign to track down suspected corrupt officials who have fled overseas to recover their assets, Reuters reported.
Chinese officials have said that more than 150 economic fugitives are hiding in the United States and the Chinese government has given the U.S. a priority list of Chinese government officials suspected of corruption who have fled to America.
