Never a program for half measures when it comes to uniforms, the Maryland football team is going all-out this weekend to honor the bicentennial of the “Star Spangled Banner.”
The school on Tuesday unveiled special Under Armour uniforms for Saturday’s game against West Virginia, which will be played 200 years to the day that Francis Scott Key was inspired to write a poem that became the national anthem.
Lines from Key’s poem, “Defence of Fort McHenry” will appear on the helmets and the uniform sleeves below the shoulders. The helmets also will feature an outline of the star-shaped Fort McHenry filled with a stars-and-stripes pattern.
In addition, players’ names will be replaced by the word “TRIUMPH” on the back of the jerseys.Â
