A new poll says Republican Charlie Baker has a razor-thin edge over Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley in the race for Massachusetts governor, although the Democrat leads among registered voters.
Mr. Baker, a businessman, is essentially tied, 46-45 percent, with Mrs. Coakley among likely voters, according to the UMass Amherst/WBZ Poll.
Among registered voters, Mrs. Coakley leads 47-42 percent when accounting for people who are leaning either way. Without leaners, she leads 42-37 percent.
Mrs. Coakley rose to national prominence when she tried to fill the seat left by the death of Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy.
She lost the special election to Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who is now trying to resurrect his Washington career by taking on Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire.
