Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said Tuesday that officials are still assessing the success of more than 20 airstrikes that happened last night against the Islamic State.
Adm. Kirby said strikes from the U.S. and Arab partners were trying to hit training facilities and headquarter buildings of the Islamic State in Syria where officials believed the terrorist group was trying to command and control their forces.
“We’re still assessing the effectiveness of these strikes, but we believe we hit what we were aiming at,” he said on MSNBC.
Eight strikes were also taken only by U.S. assets against the Khorasan terrorist group in Syria, an Al Qaeda-affiliated group based in Syria. Adm. Kirby said the U.S. took action because the group was in the “final stages of planning an imminent attack” against Europe or the U.S. homeland.
