Jet fighters to fly over D.C. in NORAD training exercise

Don’t be surprised if you see fighter jets flying over Washington, D.C., Tuesday night.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, better known by its acronym NORAD, will be conducting a training exercise in the national capital’s airspace from midnight Tuesday until 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the agency.

The event is part of regular training exercises on intercepting aircraft that NORAD has been conducting since the Sept. 11 attacks.

Officials said that “Civil Air Patrol aircraft, Air Force F-16s, an Air Force C-38 and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter will participate in the exercise.”

If there is bad weather Tuesday night, the exercise will be postponed until Wednesday, officials said.
