GOP resistance to Herbert’s Medicaid plan remains

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert may have a tough sell getting his fellow Republicans to support his Medicaid expansion plan.

Taylorsville Republican Rep. Jim Dunnigan said Thursday that some of his colleagues will only support a plan that requires people to work in exchange for health coverage.

Dunnigan says others are resistant to any plan that commits Utah to paying to cover more people.

The federal government has offered to pick up most of the cost if states expand their Medicaid programs.

The governor said Wednesday that he hopes to have a plan by the end of the month that he can present to lawmakers.

Herbert says he intends to call lawmakers into a special session to consider the plan.

There is no deadline to approve a plan.
