IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - The consulting firm advising Iowa’s three public universities on how to cut costs will face closer scrutiny of its own travel expenses under a contract amendment with the Iowa Board of Regents.

The amendment released Monday shows Deloitte Consulting LLP employees must submit receipts for airfare, lodging, rental cars and other expenses over $25.

Deloitte will not have to submit receipts for meals, but they will be capped at $20 for dinner, $12 for lunch and $8 for breakfast. The new guidelines say alcohol isn’t reimbursable, no first-class airfare will be allowed, and rental cars should generally be mid-sized or smaller.

Deloitte has been leading an efficiency study of the universities. Records show it’s billed for $2.9 million in fees at up to $450 per hour, plus $366,000 in expenses.
