SOSUA, Dominican Republic — Thousands of people in the Dominican Republic are attending the burial of former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras.

Among those attending the funeral Tuesday for the 22-year-old slugger were Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny.

Taveras was considered one of the top prospects in the majors. He hit .239 with three homers and 22 RBI in 80 games in his only season in the majors.

Taveras died Sunday after authorities say he lost control of his 2014 Chevrolet Camaro on a highway in the popular tourist region of Puerto Plata. Officials said his 18-year-old girlfriend, Edilia Arvelo, was in the car and also died.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
