WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. (AP) - Bison from Wind Cave National Park have been transferred to preserves in South Dakota and other states to help form new or boost existing herds.

The National Park Service says a total of 103 bison are part of the relocation effort. The bison transferred out of state are going to Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Illinois.

The transfers are allowed under an agreement between the Park Service and The Nature Conservancy.

Tom Farrell with the Park Service says Wind Cave’s bison herd is known for its high levels of genetic purity and diversity.

Farrell says all bison tested negative for brucellosis. He adds that each animal that is being transferred received a microcomputer chip and metal ear tag
