Republican South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley holds a 10-point lead over her Democratic challenger ahead of next month’s election, according to a Winthrop University poll released Wednesday in which more than half of the respondents say economic conditions in the state are fairly good.
Ms. Haley, the state’s first female and Indian-American governor, leads state Sen. Vincent Sheheen by 44-34 percent, the poll found, with more than 12 percent of likely voters still undecided.
The incumbent defeated Mr. Sheheen, an attorney, by 51-47 percent in 2010 to become governor, the pollsters noted.
Winthrop says 57 percent of respondents think the economic conditions in the Palmetto State are good, while more than a third of people said conditions are “fairly or very bad.”
