The Big Ten came down hard on Maryland for its pregame display before Saturday’s game at Penn State.
Stefon Diggs has been suspended one game by the conference and coach Randy Edsall reprimanded after the Terrapins’ captains refused to shake hands with their Nittany Lions counterparts at the pregame coin toss. The school also was fined $10,000.
The league described the Maryland captains’ actions, which resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, as “exceptionally regrettable,” adding: “For many, many decades the intercollegiate pre-game handshake has been in place to reflect a spirit of good will and utmost appreciation for your opponent, the game and the institutions that sponsor your sport. Selection as a team captain is an honor that carries with it a greater responsibility to act in a manner consistent with those principles.”
Diggs will miss the Terrapins’ Nov. 15 game against Michigan State while serving his suspension.
Edsall apologized for the pregame display after his team’s 20-19 win.
“Let me just start off by saying I want to apologize to Penn State fans, to their team, their university for what took place at the beginning of the game,” Edsall told reporters. “That is not who we are. Our emotions got the best of us. We’ve got to be above that.”
