Customers fled a crowded Chicago mall after a shooting in Nordstrom left a man dead and a woman critically injured.

Shots were fired Friday evening around 8:30 p.m. in the cosmetics department on the downtown store’s second floor.

Police said the man shot his then-girlfriend and then fatally shot himself as shoppers evacuated the store.

“I heard the two pops, then I just heard screaming,” one woman said, Fox News reported. “Then I just saw people running. I saw bags. It was terrifying.”

The woman who was shot was a seasonal employee in the cosmetics department, police said.

She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was in critical condition.

The incident came as a shock for foreign travelers participating in the holiday shopping tradition.

“Does this normally happen on Black Friday?” asked a 34-year-old man traveling from Singapore who was shopping at the mall when the shots were fired, Fox reported.
